Beauty Hacks - Tips and Tricks to save you time and money!

I'm sure we all like to save ourselves some cash now and then, or think it's handy when one product can have more than one use, so I thought it would be a good idea to offer up any beauty tips and tricks that I have heard, used, invented, swear by etc. I like to call them "beauty hacks" (as in life hacks) as they are little shortcuts to an easier life - and I am all about that! So I will update you as and when I discover a little gem of a beauty hack.

So without further ado, my beauty hack of today is..... Coconut Oil!

This is a bit of a wonder product, and I am never without a jar of this in the house. I make sure to only ever use Virgin or Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, however, and try to use cold-pressed oil only. This is the purest kind you can get. My favourite (pictured above) is Lucy Bee Raw Coconut Oil (£9.95 for 500ml), as this is also organic and fair trade. It is pretty widely available (I get mine from Amazon) and really good value for money, but most health stores sell some form of coconut oil, so just shop around. Just make sure it is virgin/ extra virgin to avoid any nasty additives. It usually comes as a solid, waxy looking substance, but melts easily into an oil on contact with your skin (it's melting point is just above room temperature).

Traditionally Coconut Oil is used for cooking - and it is great for that! (And a whole host of other healthy stuff too - the Lucy Bee website has a whole section on its uses and benefits) However, my jar usually finds its home in my bathroom, not my kitchen. And here's why...

1.   It is a FABULOUS hair conditioner treatment. And considerably cheaper than argan oil! I put around 2-3 tea spoons of this in my hair after melting it between my fingers. I leave it in my hair for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, and then shampoo and condition my hair as normal. I find that this makes my hair incredibly soft and shiny - I can always tell when I don't use it

2.   It is a great face moisturiser. This was the only product that sorted out my skin after I had a reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide. My face was sore, dry, cracked and scaly (nice!!) but using this for a couple of nights  in a row sorted it out double quick. This saved me when all other moisturisers failed! It didn't break me out personally, and I don't use it all the time as I usually have oily skin. Obviously just listen to your skin and don't be too liberal with the amount you put on - it is an oil after all.

3.   It is also a great body moisuriser. Apply this all over just after getting out of the shower and your skin will feel silky smooth all day.

4.   It is awesome at removing makeup. Because it is an oil this cuts through and strips off even the heaviest, most waterproof makeup, and as a bonus it doesn't dry out the skin, but leaves it soft and moisturised. I massage this all over my face and cleanse with a flannel soaked in hot water. So long, panda eyes!

5.   It can be used in place of shaving gel. When I ran out of shaving gel once I reached for this - and now I try to use it often. It moisturises your skin as you shave, so say goodbye to shaving rash and dry flaky skin.

6.   Use it as an aftersun treatment. It is so moisurising it will help your skin to recover after you have over indulged in the sunshine. My favourite combination for helping turn burnt skin into tanned skin is aloe gel and some of this stuff. It has never failed me!

7.   Use it as a body scrub - just mix with some sugar for a perfect moisturising body exfoliator.

SO there you have it! My top Beauty Hack for today. I hope you found this useful! Please let me know in the comments below if you have any beauty hacks you think I should try - I might even end up featuring it on the blog!
